PART THREE - Supervising and Assessing a Student in Professional Practice

Having gained an overview of professional practice education in Part One, and planned and prepared for receiving a student in Part Two, the remaining materials address the process of professional practice education itself, and the interaction between you and the student. The following aspects will be covered:

  • Defining the learning experience - an introduction to the factors defining the learning experience and how this affects the setting of a learning contract and learning objectives appropriate for students at different stages of development
  • Student supervision and feedback - different types of supervision, and how to use supervision and feedback to facilitate student learning
  • Assessment of students - principles of assessment, competency and reflective practice
  • Dealing with student difficulties - how to recognise and manage situations where a student is presenting problems.

When you have completed all four sections and any exercises they contain, you should be able to:

Describe the model of skill acquisition and how this relates to the development of competence

Apply the theory and practice of objective setting to your own service environment

Describe different types of supervision and what might be covered in a supervision session

Appreciate the importance of the supervisory relationship and the skills required to give effective feedback

Understand the principles of assessment

Recognise, and initiate appropriate action, when a student on professional practice appears to be having difficulties.
