Useful Info: Waste

Methane emissions from landfill contribute about 3% of the UK's total greenhouse gas emissions. On top of this, there are also the emissions associated with the manufacturing of the thing being thrown way as well as those tied to obtaining the raw materials that it is made from.

Unnecessary consumption of material "stuff" clearly has a significant negative environmental effect. Therefore, it goes without saying that, before even considering the disposal of an object, the potential for it to be reused (by you or others) should be thought about. The website Freegle can help find stuff a new home (and save you money).

Each of the buildings in SoES currently has its own recycling facilities for paper and cardboard. These are sacks (generally white) in computer and photocopy rooms and a cage for cardboard by the back entrance to the Nicholson.

Information about recycling PCs and electronic equipment is given here. It is necessary to fill in a Recycling Collections Form from FM.

Most duplex printers should now be printing double-sided by default. If yours is not, click here.

Printer cartridges are collected through  a charity scheme by Lindsay Davies. Used stamps are collected for charity in a tub on the front desk of the Herdman Building.

There are no facilities on campus for the general recycling of glass and staff should take glass recycling home with them rather than use the dedicated glass recycling bins dotted around campus (e.g. behind the VG&M and in the car park near the guild)

Ample recycling facilities for plastic, cans and paper are provided by the University-wide by the Bin the Bin scheme. PLEASE USE THESE!
