Useful Info: Procurement

Wherever possible, the decision to purchase a particular product or service should factor in the environmental performance of the item. This will not only increase the sustainability of the school but will also "send a message to the market" encouraging competitors to up their game.

The purchase of efficient electrical equipment in particular is often more economical in the long term and the School and the University fully support such purchases. Please only purchase rechargeable batteries in place of disposable ones and use compact fluorescent bulbs in place of incandescent ones.

The University procurement page lists and explains a multitude of "green label" indicators for the efficiency of different items. These can be used to help assess the environmental performance of new items.

Daily purchases consumed at work are, of course, the business of the individual. However, for those that are interested, fair trade coffee, tea, and sugar can often  be bought at very little (or zero) extra cost but ensures a  better deal for the producers. Likewise, the purchase of organic products (e.g. milk) can promote higher environmental and animal welfare standards.

Eating sustainable local food can help support the local economy and reduce our collective environmental impacts. To find out what is in season visit:  http://eatseasonably.co.uk/what-to-eat-now/calendar

The School Sustainability Group is currently working towards selecting an officially favoured supplier of food based on the degree of sustainability of the products that they offer.
