Fencing At The University of Liverpool |
Most of us should be locked up at a mental institution… but that would deny the world of our mirth and merriment! |
Liverpool University Fencing Club is a part of the University of Liverpool’s Athletic Union. We compete at university level on the British Universities Sports Association’s (BUSA) fencing league Division One (North Region) for the women’s squads, and the Premier League (North) for the men’s squad; as well as in BUSA individual tournaments and the annual Christie Cup against Manchester University and Leeds University. For the 2005-06 season, the women’s squad won the Christie Cup, making it three years in a row they have claimed this victory over our northern opponents. The women also made it to the BUSA Trophy Team Final, the first final for an LUFC women’s squad. The men’s team went undefeated in regular season, claiming the Northern Division 1 Crown for the second time in three years. They also advanced through the promotions play-offs to play in the Northern Premiership, the highest division in the BUSA fencing echelon. The Women’s squad finished second in their division. Many of our fencers also participate in domestic GBR fencing Opens and other tournaments, as well as national and international pentathlon events, and are nationally ranked at their respective weapons. Our fencers are mainly students of The University of Liverpool, though there is a small group of faculty, staff, and friends of the university who have membership in the club. Our fencers are an eclectic mix; from seasoned veterans to beginners who are only now beginning to enjoy the fine art of fencing. We enjoy a broad base of fencers from the four corners of the globe as far away as Sri Lanka, China, Greece, Italy and Panama, as well as Liverpool grown talents. Through various activities, the aims of the Liverpool University Fencing Club are: 1. To promote the sport of fencing at the University of Liverpool and within the Merseyside Community. 2. To provide students with an alternate sport in which to participate whilst at university. 3. To represent the University of Liverpool at all levels of Competition in the British Universities Sports Association and in the British Fencing Association. 4. To do our best in the annual Christie Cup against Fellow Northern Universities (Leeds and Manchester) 5. To have as much fun as possible! Membership Fees Membership fees for LUFC are charged on a semester basis (September-January / February-May). Fees for the 2006-07 academic year will be £40.00 (£20.00 for semester 1, £20.00 for semester 2). Fees are payable per semester (so no need to fork out the £40.00 in one go!). LUFC members need to purchase an Athletic Union membership from the AU office (£14.00), which will provide the student with insurance during practices at the University Sports Centre. All UoL students who compete for LUFC in BUSA related events must also have a valid British Fencing Association membership. BFA membership is renewable every year, and provides fencers with medical insurance for events that are either BUSA or BFA related (including fencing opens around the UK). All LUFC members must also have a valid Sports Centre pass, or pay the entry fee at the sports centre. We strongly recommend purchasing the £48.00 basic student pass if you are going to be using the sports centre on a frequent basis, as it will save you upwards of £100.00 during the year* (*based on three-times-a-week attendance during the academic year). |
