I'm interested in all sorts of visual stuff...

  • Front Window [Details and pictures...]
Front Window is an adult puppet show devised, created and performed by a company called "Planning a Trifle". The company was formed in 2005 by Ashley Shairp (a Senior Lecturer at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts or LIPA) and myself. We received a research and development grant from Arts Council England in 2005 which allowed us to develop a 20 minute show that was performed in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 we were fortunate to secure further substantial funding from Arts Council England to develop the show into a full piece. The full length show was performed on three nights at the Unity Theatre, Liverpool in April 2008 and was well received. We are currently planning to tour the show.

  • Victoria & Albert Museum [Details and pictures...]
Ashley and myself took part in the "Collaborators UK: Design for Performance 2003 - 2007" exhibition. The event is organised every four years by the Society of British Theatre Designers and was hosted by Nottingham Trent University in February 2007. Pieces from this exhibition were chosen to represent the United Kingdom at the Prague Quadrennial in the summer of 2007 (see below). When the pieces returned to Britain there was a small tour that finally settled in London. We entered an installation based on the show Front Window (see above). The exhibition was hosted by the V & A in South Kensington from November 2007 until August 2008. Additionally, Ashley and I were jointly responsible for the "UK Courses in Theatre Design" exhibit in the same exhibition.

  • Prague Quadrennial 2007 [Details and pictures...]
The Prague Quadrennial (PQ) is the Olympics of Theatre Design. I was asked by the Association of Courses in Theatre Design (ACTD; the body that represents UK University Theatre Design courses) to put together a system that created a stop-motion movie of each day's activities, whilst the host computer system also presented a 'kiosk' website. The kiosk system was used by visitors to PQ to view the events of the previous days. After PQ ended, I used the footage and stills we had collected to create the ACTD exhibit for the V & A (see above). The stop-motion movies can be seen here.

  • Photography [Details and pictures...]
I am interested in photography and the moving image. In autumn 2008 I became the Photographer in Residence for the University of Liverpool. I've also had commissions to do a promotional shoot for the Indie band Seaside Riot and the production photography for a new musical, "Innit: Urban Musical", at the Lowry, Salford Quays, Manchester. I've edited several short films and tried my hand at being a cameraman (difficult!). Follow the link to see a few photos... some of these photos also crop up on the department's 46" LCD slideshow.
  • HHML [Details and pictures...]
I am the chairman of Harwood House Management Ltd, a small company that owns the freehold of a Victorian merchant's mansion a few miles north of Liverpool city centre. The property was converted into flats in the late 1940s but these were only sold off individually during 2001 and 2002. The flats have a great view of Liverpool Bay, and of Antony Gormley's installation "Another Place", which lives on the beach.
