Pollution in Marine Ecosystems - An Introduction

The subject of pollution in marine systems is a very large one - the lectures as part of this course can only act as an introduction.

An introduction to important issues in two areas of marine pollution caused by persistent pollutants was given. particularly to those Heavy metals  and
Persistent Organic Pollutants  that have caused specific problems in marine systems.

The topic of Endocrine Disruption was mentioned because of its relevance to the impact of many of the pollutants of interest.

Case study

As well as the examples mentioned of relevance to the Irish Sea and the Mersey Estuary, you are recommended to consider the impacts that have been caused by the key persistent pollutants on a more international scale. The ecosystem of the Baltic Sea is recommended as a Case Study of interest and relevance
