The Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea was introduced as a Case Study of the impacts that have actually been caused in marine systems by persistent pollutants. These impacts have been caused by a wide range of substances including various heavy metals as well as persistent organic chemicals that have entered an area of sea which has restricted interchange with the wider ocean. Do remember though that the Baltic is fairly idiosyncratic in its environmental properties because of the large proportion of freshwater entering it.

Some more extensive notes are available here

A specific website providing more detailed information on the environmental problems of the Baltic Sea is being developed for use with a number of our courses.
