Persistent Organic Pollutants (PoPs)

The most important organic pollutants with respect to impacts in marine systems are halogenated aromatic compounds such as various Chlorinated pesticides (of which DDT is the classic example), chlorinated (or brominated) industrial chemicals such as PCBs (flame retardents such as PBDEs) and by products formed as part of industrial processes or during combustion such as dioxins and furans.

This Link will transfer you to our separate site which introduces the Organohalogens such as PCBs, Dioxins and Brominated Flame Retardents

The introductory PowerPoint slides presented in the lecture (the main point of which was to illustrate the importance that these substances have via the human food components taken from marine ecosystems) (A PowerPoint slideshow should start or download depending on your browser settings. The File is ca 2MB in size and may take some time to load)
