Always use Worksheet mode!

Maple 13 has two interfaces; Document and Worksheet. I strongly recommend using the worksheet interface. It produces much smaller saved files (which are also more compatible with earlier versions of Maple). The only disadvantage is that the interface doesn't look so slick, and is fussier about correct syntax (semi-colons at the end of commands etc).

By default when Maple is installed on a MWS computer the (red) desktop link is for the Document interface. To use the Worksheet interface click Start->Programs->Maple13->Classic Worksheet maple 13. If you want, you can right-click on this and select the option to set up a (yellow) desktop link for Classic Worksheet Maple 13.

What to do if Maple won't start

  1. First look for the Maple 13 icon on the desktop, or in Start->Programs->Maple13. If it's there, and has the normal Maple icon, then you should be OK.
  2. Otherwise, go to Start->Network->Mathematics->Maple13 and Right-click on the Maple 13 icon. Choose Verify from the drop-down menu, and after the MWS has done its stuff start again at step 1. If Verify isn't on the drop-down menu, then choose Open instead and then return to the beginning of step 2.
  3. If you don't have a Network entry on your Start menu, then make sure there isn't a little icon in the bottom right of the screen showing a magnifying glass rotating around a washing machine. If there is, then wait for it to stop rotating. If there isn't, then log out and in again, and don't touch anything until the magnifying glass stops turning.
  4. If all else fails, contact the helpdesk. Maple is provided and supported by Computing Services Department, not by this department.

Using Maple off-campus

Maple is commercial software, so you will need to pay (quite a lot) to install it on your own computers.

An alternative is to use the Windows Terminal Service provided by the Computing Services Department. Click on the link above, log in with your usual username and password, install the Citrix software on the Client Detection and Download page if necessary, and then find Maple 13 in the Mathematics application group.

Since you will be running Maple on a remote computer, it may be fairly slow.

Exercise sheets 4 to 6

There will be 6 exercise sheets, sheets 1 to 3 dealing with LaTeX and sheets 4 to 6 dealing with Maple. They will be posted here as they become available. The sheets were devised by Dr. Toby Hall (but any mistakes are now my responsibility).

Some documentation

The Maple Learning Guide. This describes the most important commands in Maple and how you might use them to solve particular problems. Please don't print out the whole of this guide on the department's printers.

A Quick reference card. It's worth looking through this for occasional nuggets of information, though much of it isn't relevant to Maple as we'll be learning it in this module.
