Centre of Statistical Consulting for St Paul’s Eye Unit and Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, University of Liverpool

Lead: Gabriela Czanner

Who is the consultancy for:

This consulting service is for ophthalmic researchers and clinicians associated with St. Paul’s Eye Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Department of Eye and Vision Science at University of Liverpool (since 2012) and to researchers from Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease at University of Liverpool (from June 2016).

How to schedule an appointment for consultation:

For an appointment, please e-mail czanner@liverpool.ac.uk. In your e-mail:

·         Provide a short description of your consulting needs. Alternatively, you can fill-in the consultation form which asks the kind of information that is needed for the consultation.

·         Let us know of any deadlines for your project for which you are seeking advice.

If you are a student, RA, PDRA:

If a students, RA and PDRA wishes to discuss their project they should first discuss their statistics needs with the supervisor or PI of such project. If the PI of the project agrees with the consultations, then the student (or RA, PDRA) can send us the enquiry, while copying the supervisor in all the emails. We prefer to meet the students (RA or PDRA) with their supervisor. If not possible, then we can meet the students (RA or PDRA) without the supervisor, in which case we will send a summary of the consultations to the supervisor.

Examples of consultation:

Recent examples include discussion of reviewer’s comments to your manuscript, advice on the best design for clinical study or for laboratory experiment, checking your sample size calculations, discussing how to present your results in a manuscript or talk, advice on proper data analysis methods, advice on the costing of statistician’s work for a research funding proposal, discussing someone else’s published paper.

What will happen when you contact us?

We will aim to schedule an initial 10-minutes meeting with you within a week to access your query and to find out how to best help. At the initial meeting we will find out what you need in terms of design or analysis. Then we will advise which statistician has the required expertise, and we can help to schedule the second meeting with such statistician. The second meeting may take several weeks to schedule, due to busy schedules of all statisticians. We also serve as a point of contact to receive a consultancy from the Department of Biostatistics at University of Liverpool.
