Two-part homeworks: reducing 'waiting time' in tutorials

For more information contact: Anna Pratoussevitch.

Several lecturers circulate sets of homework problems which consist of two parts: 'practice problems' and 'homework problems'.

The first part, the 'practice problems', consists of examples with fully worked out solutions distributed together with the problem sheets. As a variant, only some solutions are written in full, and for others, only the final answers are given. The advantage of circulating sample solutions together with the problems is that students are motivated to try to understand the solutions, and it gives them a starting point if they have no idea what to do with the question (and something to work on if tutorial helpers are busy).

The second part, the 'homework problems', gives the examples which are to be submitted for marking, and which contribute to the CA. Model solutions are returned together with marked scripts.

Examples used by Anna Pratoussevitch are here (two separate exercise sheets).
