A 'combinatorial optimisation' algorithm is used in the creation of the synthetic population microdata hosted on this website. The aim is to select a combination of household from a sample survey that, when aggregated, best-fit published small-area Census tabulations. Aspects of this approach are described in print. In addition, a variety of more detailed reports, listed below, are available for downloading. The set of constraints finally adopted for use in creating the UK small-area microdata varies slightly from those given in the End of Award Report, and may be found here.
