This plant which is the source of quinine is native to the rainforests in S. America. According to legend, this plant was first used to cure malaria in Peru in 1638. It was then introduced to European medicine and first went on sale in England in 1658. Throughout the mid 1600s up until the mid 1800s quinine was the main treatment for malaria.
