Diploma thesis in the Institute of Physical Chemistry on nanosecond-time resolved spectroscopy of bridged electron donor/acceptor compounds.

 


1991


Ph.D. , Institute of Physical Chemistry, Technical University of München
For my Ph.D. thesis, I performed experimental and theoretical investigations on reaction centres of photosynthetic bacteria in external magnetic fields. For these investigations, I built two new systems for the measurement of transient absorbance changes with high precision on the nanosecond-time scale.
Advisor: Prof. M.E. Michel-Beyerle.

1991-1994

Post-Doc, Institute of Physical Chemistry, Technical University of München
During this time, I continued my spectroscopic investigations of bacterial reaction centers, extended them to Photosystem II of plants, did first experiments on DNA-photolyase and more theoretical work on the magnetic field effect in photosynthetic reaction centres.

 


1994-1996


Post-Doc, Chemistry Department, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA
(supported by a research fellowship of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft)
With Prof. R.M. Hochstrasser, I performed experimental studies on ultrafast relaxation processes in solution, such as folding of small peptides, energy relaxation in proteins and coherent motions of small molecules after photodissociation. For that purpose, I built a transient absorbance spectrometer for wavelengths in the range 270 nm - 10 
mm with 100 fs time resolution, which was based on a Ti:sapphire laser system.

 

1996-1999

Research Associate, Institute of Physical Chemistry, Technical University of München
With Prof. M.E. Michel-Beyerle, I investigated proteins and model compounds using time-resolved absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy. For this purpose, I built a spectrometer for measuring transient absorbance changes on the 100 fs time scale in the visible and IR region (400nm - 10
mm).
