The field trip this year will take place on the Wirral Peninsula and its theme will be the last glaciation of Merseyside. It will be guided by Dr Richard Chiverrell, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at Liverpool. His research interests are a mixture of glacial/fluvial geomorphology and palaeoecology, in particular focusing on the linkages between palaeoecological evidence for human activity and climate change and the response of the hillslope and fluvial geomorphological system. He has also, with Geoff Thomas, published on Quaternary stratigraphy of the British Isles and the deglaciation of the Irish Sea basin.
The day will be split into two parts. The first half will be spent on the beach near Thurstaston and will look at a series of subglacial diamictons and outwash sand and gravels in the cliff sections. The second half will be spent at Thurstaston common and will look at the well-preserved and -graffitied sub-glacial channels cut into the Permo-Triassic bedrock spine of the Wirral Peninsula.
We will have lunch between the two field sites and have the opportunity for a drink at the end of the day.
We will arrive back at the Geography Department by 16 00.
