Royal Astronomical Society Specialist Discussion Meeting

"Observing and simulating Earth's core and the magnetic field"

Date and time: Friday November 8, 10:00 - 16:00

Location: Burlington House, Piccadilly, London

Fundamental descriptions of the composition, structure and evolution of Earth's core remain elusive, but are necessary to improve our understanding of the long-term behaviour of the geodynamo, core energy budget and interaction with the mantle. Recent advances coupling observations, numerical simulations and theoretical models of core dynamics and the geodynamo have provided new insights and challenged prior interpretations of Earth's interior structure and its evolution. This specialist discussion seeks to bring together the observational and modelling communities to convene on the current state of the core, its development and interaction with the solid Earth. Talks and posters will comprise a range of interdisciplinary topics related to this theme, including seismology, geodynamics, mineral physics, geochemistry and geo/paleomagnetism.
