Chaos and Fractals Exhibition 2008

The exhibition

In September 2008, the British Association for the Advancement of Science held its Festival of Science at Liverpool.

A mathematical event at the Festival, called "Science and Fractals: New Frontiers", involved lectures by Mark Holland (Exeter), Lasse Rempe (UoL) and Arnaud Chéritat (Toulouse). The event was organized by Lasse Rempe and accompanied by an exhibition of computer graphics created by mathematics researchers from around the world. Later this exhibition, with some modifications, was also shown at the Victoria Gallery and Museum in Liverpool.

You can view the poster that accompanied the exhibition, giving some background on the theory of dynamical systems and why these images were created.

(The poster contains two public domain images from Wikimedia Commons: the image of the Lorenz attractor is by Cepheus, while the Mandelbrot set was uploaded by BernardH.)

You can also view low-resolution versions of the images contained in the exhibtion. The original images can be seen in the student resource rooms at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Liverpool.

BBC Audio Slideshow

The BBC became interested in the images and created an audio slideshow from the exhibition pictures, as well as some additional images, together with an interview with Lasse Rempe.

You can watch and listen to the audio slide show on the BBC website.
