Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Where can I purchase posters / prints /etc of these images?
A: The copyright for the images remains with the individual
contributors. If there is a particular image you are interested in, you
might try to contact the mathematician in question.
Currently I have no plans to make prints of my own images available,
although I may change my mind if there is sufficient interest. I intend
to post low-resolution versions of my images on
the Wikimedia Commons, using
the Creative Commons Attribution License.
If you are very eager to obtain a high-quality poster print or a
high-resolution image for creating such a print, feel free to contact me.
I do not intend to try and make money of these images myself, but may ask
you to make a donation to the Liverpool mathematics department.
- Q: You say in the slide show that
your images are not art because of your intention
when creating them. Do you think the artist's intention is necessary
for a work to be art? Do you think mathematical images cannot be art?
A:
I am a mathematician and
not an art critic / philosopher / expert, so I do not presume to
be able to make a clear definition of art. When I look at my own images,
I first and foremost see a mathematical object, and that was also my
intention in creating them. Therefore, when I look at them, I do not
see a work of art. This is not to say that I might not
consider other images with connections to mathematics to be art. In fact,
my images might be considered
art by other observers; if so, I am very pleased!
