Experiment and Experience: Ancient Egypt In The Present

A practical demonstration and short illustrated talk of those woodworking tools used by Ancient Egyptian carpenters. A discussion of the tools marks that can be identified on woodwork including attempts to turn wood using a simple replica lathe similar to that illustrated in the tomb of Petosiris.

Ancient Egyptian Woodworking: Tools and Techniques.

Held on Monday 23rd October 2006.

A seminar presented by Geoffrey Killen to undergraduates and PGR's of SACE. At the end of the formal presentation a brief demonstration of the tools and techniques employed by ancient Egyptian carpenters was given using a range of replica tools.

Workshop at the Bard Graduate Center, New York.

Held on Friday 25th October 2002.

Students in the class of Professor Elizabeth Simpson are seen here with stools manufactured by them during a three hour practical session with Geoffrey Killen. These stools which were manufactured using replica tools and techniques used by ancient Egyptian carpenters are similar in style to those found by John Garstang during his 1902-1904 excavations at Beni Hasan.

 

The Tomb of Iufaa at Abusir.

Miroslav Verner, Director of the Czech mission at Abusir and Professor of Egyptology at Charles University, Prague, describes the discovery of furniture in the Tomb of Iufaa at Abusir in Egyptian Archaeology No.14; 1999. A wooden chest, similar to E 2773 which is preserved in the Louvre Museum, was found intact in this 26th dynasty tomb.
