SCENARIO

Module 7: The Comatose Patient

Current Assessment

SCENARIO 1

A 78 year old man lives alone, and is found by his home help one morning collapsed on the floor. She calls for an ambulance and he is taken to the local A&E Department. The SHO finds that he is deeply unconscious with slow, shallow respirations. Soon after, he has a cardio respiratory arrest and cannot be resuscitated.

SCENARIO 2

A 25 year old single woman is found unconscious on the kitchen floor by her 7 year old son. The little boy manages to call a neighbour who dials 999. Two paramedics arrive soon after, and they find the patient cold, groaning and restless; but not responding to commands. There is an empty bottle of vodka and a box of antidepressant tablets near her. She is taken to hospital and the neighbour looks after her little boy.
