Lecture Title: Introduction to Respiratory Medicine


Lecture Synopsis Sheet: Summary / Abstract

An overview of the respiratory system from a chest physician.

Key elements of the lecture include:

The anatomy of the:

Upper airway, trachea, bronchi and lungs

The chest wall and diaphragm

Microscopic anatomy of the lung

Physiology of respiration and the control of respiration

Introduction to blood gases and the respiratory centre

Ventilation and perfusion

Introduction to clinical respiratory medicine – History

Examination and investigation

Broad classification of respiratory disease to illustrate the above

Airways disease (asthma & COPD)

Lung (intestinal disease)

Cardiovascular disease

Chest wall disease

e.g.s of cancer, infection, fibrosis, mechanical
