Emma Calderón

Emma Calderón was a poet, journalist and literary criticr, who spent most of her life in Cádiz. She was the daughter of Mariano Calderón
Freire and Matilde de Gálvez, of Cádiz. Calderón published a
number of poems in the monthly journal Ilustración Gallega during 1913-14. Her poem ‘A
Cristo crucificado’ was published with a portrait
and a brief caption that describes her as ‘Una de las poetisas más fecundas de
nuestra época. Sus trabajos anden a granel esparcidos por la Prensa. Acaba de
publicar un hermoso libro titulado Poesía y Prosa’ [One of the most
fertile poetesses of our time. Her works appear scattered throughout the Press. She
has just published a lovely book called
Poetry and Prose].
In 1913, she was named a ‘socia maestra’ of the
Asociación de Escritores Gallegos, ‘por haber obtenido más de ocho premios en
públicos Certámenes’ [for having
won more than eight prizes in public competitions]. Her Galician connection may have been
through her father’s family. She edited
several editions of the section ‘Revista Literaria
Americana’ for the Revista
de las Españas between 1934-36 (Amate Blanco
