The most important organic pollutants with respect to impacts in marine systems are halogenated aromatic compounds such as various Chlorinated pesticides (of which DDT is the classic example), chlorinated industrial chemicals such as PCBs and by products formed as part of industrial processes or during combustion such as dioxins and furans.
