TOPIC 1 : THE BRIEF

The brief is to investigate which ions discharged to the Weaver are important in changing the fauna and flora

You will be using information obtained from experimental toxicity testing together with additional information obtained from elsewhere using the internet.

The limitations of time and resources will limit you to a consideration of the amphipod crustacean populations sampled from the Weaver downstream of Northwich and a nearby clean upstream site.

You will be provided with water collected from the same locations together with supplies of Sodium chloride, Calcium chloride, and Ammonium chloride.

You need to design a set of experiments to determine the toxicity of these materials so that you can predict their effects on the two species of crustacean involved. At the same time you will test sediment samples from above and below the points of discharge to see if there is any residual toxicity building up in the environment.
